Sue Deakin

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon – West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust

Hi Im Sue Deakin

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury st Edmunds for 17 years.

Trained on the Manchester Rotation with foot and ankle and paed fellowships there and Wrightington.

I specialise in foot and ankle surgery and paediatric orthopaedics and im also on the all comers on call trauma rota.

For the oldies out there I was one of the ‘Orthoteers’ who set up a FRCS revision website with Len Funk and Jon Borril in about 2001. For the young ones that’s the thing that happened before Orthobullets .

I am a member of faculty for AO and have chaired AO principles courses in Leeds which I would thoroughly recommend as I haven’t stopped learning.

I have been a clinical lead for our local orthopaedic team and Im also a slightly scarred recently resigned divisional director of all surgeons at our place.

My current leadership role is trustwide as the Human Factors clinical lead. My job is to help make it easier for people to be able  do the right thing. This also helps welleing.

In this current crisis nobody really knows what ‘the right thing’ is but I have seen much shallower hierarchies developing where people with ideas have been empowered to do so which can only help each other and our patients.

I am also part of the wellbeing, workforce  and better working lives group for the trust.

I have a 21 year old daughter and 18 year old son born during my fulltime training.

I have learnt a lot about resilience but am always learning more and look forward to you sharing your thoughts and  ideas  about how we and our teams and wider teams can build further resilience in the future.
