Prof Mason qualified from the University of Wales College of Medicine, completing his orthopaedic training in Wales before moving to Liverpool as a consultant specialising in Major trauma and foot and ankle surgery. He was the first trainee to win the Chan Chen memorial prize twice and was the first fellow to be awarded the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Gold fellowship award. He undertook fellowships in Dreseden with Prof Hans Zwipp and Salt Lake City with Prof Saltzmann before his home fellowship in Liverpool. His research in the last few years has become nationally and internationally recognised, winning 14 national and international prizes in 8 years. He has been awarded the Hunterian Professorship form the Royal college of surgeons in 2019 for his work on ankle fractures, Robert Jones gold medal and Association prize in 2017 for his work on the evolution of the foot and Jaques Duparc prize from EFORT for his joint work on discovery of a new foot ligament. Prof Mason is involved in British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, as an outcomes committee member, leading a project on bringing trauma outcomes to the foot and ankle National registry.

Mr Mason is also very involved in teaching, both locally and nationally, begin involved in the School of medicine and as an invited faculty courses for the British Orthopaedic Association, Royal College of Surgeons and British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
