Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board
I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon appointed to the Royal Gwent Hospital Newport in 2005. My special interest is adult foot and ankle surgery having trained in Wales and gained fellowship experience in the US with Ted Hansen and Germany with Hans Zwipp.
I don’t always like my work every day but I love it, a bit like my kids. The thing that I am passionate about is the difference clinicians can make as leaders in healthcare and viewing all care from the eyes of the patient. It was the Health Foundation Generation Q programme which taught me to view leadership and quality improvement with a different lens.
Teaching and training gives me fulfilment from my work because it is the one gift, that we as surgeons can give to the world as a legacy but also because good trainers can inspire doctors to become great trainers in their future.
I have done various roles in my career, some of which I am proud of, some not so much. The things I have done have not always worked but they have all made a difference.
My current roles are :
Education Committee British Foot and Ankle Society
Chairman of Education and Revalidation Committee British Orthopaedic Association
FRCS (Tr & Orth) Examiner
Previous roles were :
Clinical Director of Orthopaedics Aneurin Bevan Local Health Board
College Tutor Royal Gwent Hospital
Chairman of the Local Negotiating Committee Aneurin Bevan Health Board
Welsh Consultants Committee
